Girls will learn about snow science and a wide variety of careers within snow safety and snow science. After learning how to cross country ski the girls will learn about many aspects of snow science including the different forms of snow grains, snow metamorphosis, and the many layers within our snowpack. Throughout the weekend, girls will also learn about careers within snow safety and snow science from female professionals working in the field known to the program as STEM Mentors. Our STEM Mentors not only share their career knowledge but also work with girls about how they overcame the gender gap within their career.
Mar. 8th - 10th
We've got a fever for learning and the only prescription is more Girls in STEM! Students will examine the human anatomy, physiology, and have the opportunity to practice first aid throughout the program. Girls will also learn about the careers within the health care industry directly from our STEM Mentors who are women currently working in the field. Not only will the girls learn about available careers but the steps they'll need to take to pursue a career within the industry.
This Girls in STEM program is for moms and daughters. (Girls are still welcome even if mom isn't available to participate) It's time to dig into the science and design of gardens and landscapes. Participants will sketch and make plans for their personal outdoor space, play botanical games, learn the anatomy of flora, and plant a starter garden. Mothers and daughters will leave with a green thumb, an understanding of landscape architecture careers, and a plan for their garden or outdoor space. The program will be supported by our STEM Mentors who can give you expert feedback on all landscape designs.
Join us Saturday, May 18, 2019 for the annual Run to the Shrine fundraiser for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It is a 4-mile race that winds through the Zoo with giraffe, elephants and wallabies along the way. Participants can run, walk or even crawl their way to new heights through this unique picturesque climb to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. Enjoy the stunning views of Colorado Springs below while gaining nearly 1,000 feet in elevation as you make your way to the top. This event is the ONLY time foot traffic is allowed on the stunning road up to the Shrine.
The race is chip-timed, and it is a great route for competitive athletes, weekend warriors, casual walkers and families of all ages. Jogging strollers with safety equipment are welcome!
Run to the Shrine race registration includes Zoo admission for the rest of the day (up to a $24 value per person!), a commemorative performance T-shirt featuring our animal mascot (limited quantities of women's sizes are available, so register early!) and a post-event party at the Zoo's Lodge at Moose Lake. All proceeds help feed and care for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's 750+ animals. Since the Zoo does not receive any tax support, community fundraisers like Run to the Shrine help keep the zoo "running."
